Buon Xao festival (it means Moon on the 20th in the Thai language) originates from the tradition of the Mau's death anniversary, which is an opportunity for the people of Tien Ky commune, Tan Ky district to remember the merits of King Le Loi and his generals and forefathers participated in defeating the invading Minh invaders, bringing peace and independence to our nation.

Legend has it that 594 years ago, this place was chosen as a strategic rear to prepare for decisive battles by the Lam Son insurgent army, led by Le Loi as a commander, first of all, Tra Lan citadel (inow belonging to Bong Khe commune - Con Cuong district today). This was both a capital and an important military base of the Minh army. Having won the battle of Bo Dang (in present-day Quy Chau district), Lam Son insurgent army recruited more soldiers and received food support from the people in the area to lay siege to Tra Lan citadel, cut off the road to aid and force the enemy to surrender. After defeating Tra Lan citadel, the insurgent army continued to move forward, defeating a series of enemy cities and then marching to the North, liberated Thang Long citadel, abolishing the domination of the Minh Dynasty.
