MONUMENT TO THE LE DYNASTY CANAL - NGHI LOC

Monument to the Le dynasty canal in Nghi Yen commune, Nghi Loc district, Nghe An province was built in 1996 by Vietnam Department of Inland Waterways in collaboration with People's Committee of Nghe An province.

The Le dynasty canal is the first waterway, which was dug in 983, the Early Le Dynasty (981-1009). With a strategic vision both in terms of military and economy, Le Dai Hanh had to dig a canal from Ma River through Dong Co mountain along the South - North axis to Ba Hoa river, then from there to open the stream to Nghe An. Since then, later dynasties continuously dug more rivers, connecting natural rivers into a waterway extending from Ninh Binh to Ha Tinh province.

The part of the Le dynasty canal in Nghe An is 128km long, including: Mo canal (connecting Hoang Mai river and Thoi river), Dau canal (connecting Thoi river with Hau river), My Giang canal (connecting Thoi river with Bung river), Dau and Sat canals (connecting Bung river with Cam river), Gai canal, Chinh Dich canal, Vinh river (connecting Cam river with Lam river)... flowing through many districts, cities and towns in Nghe An province such as Hoang Mai, Quynh Luu, Dien Chau, Nghi Loc, Vinh city, Hung Nguyen districts ...

In the history of Nghe An construction and development, the Le dynasty canal has made many contributions in terms of transportation and irrigation, contributing to the formation of many rich and densely populated villages, and at the same time making a significant contribution to the development of the agricultural, commercial, and handicraft economy...

During the resistance war against the US, the army forces, youth volunteers, and officials of the transport sector did not manage the rain of bombs and bullets to ensure the southern support line was always smooth. Only the Le dynasty canal route in Nghe An (from 1965 to 1968) the US Air Force has carried out over 190,000 attacks, dropped more than 700,000 tons of bombs on military targets, traffic hubs, economic facilities and residential areas in Nghe An province..

In December 2014, Nghe An Department of Transport launched a movement of donations and support from agencies and units in the transportation industry, to restore Monument to the Le dynasty canal with a total budget of 1.9 billion VND and was inaugurated on February 12, 2015. Currently, the monument has a total area of 442.7m2, with the main items being the Memorial stele (write names and hometowns of 130 martyrs); Reliefs; Monument to the Le dynasty canal …

The monument is located between two reliefs, 9m high, the front side engraved with the content "The Le dynasty canal contributed to victory in the great resistance war to save the country". The back is embossed with 3 words "Le dynasty canal" with quite large size.

In 2016, in order to honor the historical value of the Le dynasty canal - a typical waterway project through the periods, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the tradition of the Inland waterway industry (August 11, 1956 -:- August 11, 2016), Vietnam Department of Inland Waterways in collaboration with People's Committee of Nghe An province made a dossier, submitted it to the competent authorities, and which was recognized Le dynasty canal on Nghe An land as a national historical relic by Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
