Dinh Bat Tuy was from Bui Ngoa village (now called Hung Trung commune, Hung Nguyen district, Nghe An province), born into a family with a tradition of Confucianism. His ancestors lived in Trang An village, Hoa Lu cave, migrated to Bui Ngoa village, Bui Khong commune from the Le dynasty. From then on, his family-clan followed the Confucian career, appearing many famous generals, talented level with martial arts dual talent.
In his youth, Dinh Bat Tuy showed his intelligence, smart, and character more than people. While his future was wide open, a disaster struck him, both his father and mother died. That year, he was only 13 years old, he worked as a hired worker to earn a living, but he always nurtured his dreams and ambitions about "cửa Khổng, sân Trình". A monk in the village knew about Dinh Bat Tuy's situation and admired the will to rise up of Dinh Bat Tuy, so that monk brought him home to nurture and continue to educate him. At the age of 25, Dinh Bat Tuy passed the Bachelor's exam, then studied at Quoc Tu Giam school. After that, he was assigned by the imperial court to hold many important positions.
For nearly 40 years as a mandarin (1554 -1589), Dinh Bat Tuy was a scholar, a Warrior-Captain who was good at both literature and martial arts, loyal to the insurgent army and patriot, one of "the famous and loyal Warrior-Captain" who supported the 3 reigns of King Le: Le Trung Tong (1554 - 1555), Le Anh Tong (1556 - 1572) and Le The Tong (1573 - 1589), had many contributions to the work of quelling rebellion, peaceful people, and stabilizing the situation of the country in the century XVI. His name and merits were recorded in the national history as the "most meritorious mandarin" for the country at that time.
He fell seriously ill and died on April 17, 1589, at the age of 74. In the midst of the busy national affairs, King Le The Tong still held his funeral according to national rites and provided money, sent soldiers to bring his death-body back to his hometown (Bui Ngoa village, Bui Khong commune, now known as Hung Nguyen, Nghe An) for burial, set up a temple to worship, called Dinh Bat Tuy temple. In addition, he is also worshiped at many other relics in Hung Nguyen district
Dinh Bat Tuy Temple is located on an area of over 10,000m2. Despite having undergone hundreds of years of existence, with many restorations, the temple still retains its ancient appearance. Every year, on important holidays at the temple, it attracts local authorities and a large number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren across the country to attend the ceremony. The temple has been classified as a National Historic Site (Decision No. 1549/QD on September 30, 1991). Currently, Dinh Bat Tuy's name is also given to many schools and many roads inside and outside the province./.
