XUAN UC TEMPLE  –  HOANG MAI TOWN

Xuan Uc Temple is located in Quynh Lien commune, Hoang Mai town, Nghe An province, where worships the famous Warrior-Captain in the 11th century - Dang Te, a Warrior-Captain with great merit along with comanders at that time such as Ly Thuong Kiet supported King Ly Thanh Tong to defeat the Chiem Thanh invaders and expand the territory to Ma Linh, Bo Chinh, Dia Ly (Thua Thien Hue today).

Dang Te was born in the year of Earth Tiger (Wu Yin) (1038), in Dong village, Van Uc hamlet, Hoan Hau group, now Quynh Lien commune, Hoang Mai town, Nghe An province. He has a handsome appearance, was good at studying, was a good commander, was adept in military tactics, and was good at literature.

In the year of Earth Rooster (1069), the Chiem Thanh invaders sent troops to harass, King Ly Thanh Tong personally accompanied Dang Te and some other martial officials to the battle, capturing the Chiem Thanh's King Che Cu, forcing Che Cu to offer three continents including Dai Ly, Ma Linh and Bo Chinh to redeem his lives. After winning the battle, the king opened a festival to welcome troops and reward the commanders. Mr. Dang Te was promoted to the rank of Đo sat Đai tuong quan, commanding 5 armies to continue to go to the town of Phuong Nam. In the battle against the Chiem Thanh invaders on the Mai Giang River, he fought bravely and died in battle. The king and the whole court mercifully anointed him with the title of a deity of blessings.

In memory of Dang Te's merits, the people built a temple to worship him. The temple has been restored and upgraded many times by the government and local people. At the temple, many miracles took place, the biggest of which was his death anniversary on October 10th (annual lunar calendar), attracting a great deal of attention from the people of the whole country in general and the people of Quynh Lien commune in particular.

In 1996, Xuan Uc Temple was ranked as a national historical and cultural relic by Ministry of Culture and Information.
